Emerald City Comicon 2015

March 23rd, 2015 — 3:11am

Just a heads up, Emerald City Comicon is just around the corner (March 27-29)! Once again, I’ll be exhibiting with my friends the “Imaginary People” at Booth #406.

I’ll have plenty of arts and will be taking toned-paper sketch commissions during the convention.

Also, just a small announcement…

I’ve created a Tumblr blog for Blind Follies: The Flower and Death (my Hades and Persephone comic). If you are interested in the progress of this project, you can follow it here.

Projects / Convention Updates

March 9th, 2015 — 6:28pm

So Sac-Con back on March 1 was amazing. I loved the new location and I’m eager to see the show settle into the new space. New transitions can always be a little rough, but the room to breathe was a very welcomed change. So nice to see all the new faces in the crowd, too!

My table at Sac-Con AA-1 (March 1, 2015)

I’m also already signed up for the next Sac-Con in Fall (Oct. 25), but I’ll be at plenty of other shows before then.

Emerald City Comicon (Seattle) is already around the corner (March 27-29)! Lots to do before then, but I am looking forward to spending some extra time in the city this time around.

In the meantime, I’ve been working on upping my art game in preparation for drawing my comic (Blind Follies: The Flower and Death), as I finalize my character designs and style choices for the project. Rewrites on the later chapters has also started, but will move at its own pace. I already have 4 chapters of final scripts to work with art-wise for now.

Colors for Shane Matthew Murphy’s Birdland Comic have also begun. I’ve been coloring other bits and bobs for some of Shane’s other projects, which I will post when I’m able. Looking forward to wrapping up our new variant cover reward so we can get these Kickstarter packages all shipped out. Not long now!

The new season of 916 Ink Makes Comics has started, in which my creator friend Eben E.B. Burgoon teaches local kids the art of writing for comics. I am excited to again meet with the youngsters and, with my peers, help bring life to their stories through my art. I am always in awe of the work done by 916 Ink in the name of youth literacy. Truly great stuff.

Blind Follies: The Flower and Death *Script Finished*

January 12th, 2015 — 9:08pm

Ever since I was a kid, whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said, “I want to be an author and illustrator.” Though I could barely form the words, the weight of their truth remained with me through the years.

I used to spend hours upon hours writing stories, accompanying them with illustrations on each page. When most kids were grounded from playing outside or visiting friends, I was grounded from writing. My parents used to have to take away my floppy disks (remember those?) just to get my head out of the clouds long enough to complete my homework. (It didn’t work.) Little did they know, I still kept copies of the disks and printed copies of my stories so I could write with a pen on the sly. (So rebellious.)

Following high school, I was left with a treasure-tome of hundreds of pages of incomplete books, uncounted chapters leading to nowhere, binders and binders of outlines and notes, portfolios and sketchbooks of characters and illustrations, and dozens and dozens of discarded ideas… But now for the first time in my life–from beginning to end–I have actually FINISHED a story!

The script for my graphic novel BLIND FOLLIES: The Flower and Death is finished!

Two-hundred-and-seven planned comic pages; fifty-five pages of typed text; seven total chapters; one script…

Hades and Persephone Messy Sketch

Messy concept of Hades and Persephone from the comic, with a quickie splash of added color.

Words can’t describe what it feels like to see the full arc in its entirety. I also can’t say how daunting it is looking ahead at the world of work that waits for me. But I am all the more excited for the journey now that I have the road map! It’s bound to be a long learning process. Wish me luck!

Convention Season Aftermath

October 27th, 2014 — 10:36pm

Super Sac-ConThank you to everyone who came out to support me at the recent Super Sac-Con, Oct 18 & 19! Being my last show of the year, it was nice to see some friendly faces, as well as get to know some new fans.

Shane and I were both very excited to debut The Black and White Edition of Birdland #1. He will be wrapping up some last lingering Kickstarter bits and bobs and sending those rewards out soon. Keep checking the Kickstarter page for those updates. You can also follow Shane’s work on the Birdland Comic Facebook page.

I can’t tell you how proud I am of the coloring work I’ve already done, as well as the lettering throughout the book. But my work is only just beginning! Work now starts on coloring all 24 pages for the Birdland in Technicolor edition of the book.

In the meantime, while I enjoy a break from conventions, I’ll also be working on my own comic: Blind Follies: The Flower and Death, my own personal take on the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone. The scripts for books 1 & 2 are both complete, with future scripts all outlined and storyboarding for book 1 finally in production.

I’ll continue to post sketches and updates as the work continues. Being my first full length solo project, it’s bound to take me some time, lots of tea, and plenty of trial and error. I only hope, in the end, I’ll bring out a side of the old stories that’s both romantic and refreshing, as enjoyable as it is personal.
